This May and June CCHS invites our alumni, former parents, current and former faculty and all friends of Camden Catholic to celebrate the enduring legacy and lives of two retired faculty members: Jack Phipps (1938-2023) and Wayne Nystrom (1947-2026).
At Camden Catholic High School, we were blessed to know Jack Phipps not just as a teacher, but as a mentor, a guide, and a friend. His passion for math, his unwavering support for students, and his deep commitment to their well-being left a lasting mark on our community, one that continues to inspire us today. Since we launched the Jack Phipps Memorial Fund in 2024, the CCHS community has raised over $36,000 in Mr. Phipps' memory for scholarships, tuition assistance, and mental health initiatives at Camden Catholic. Once again, we are honoring his memory during Mental Health Awareness Month.
Wayne Nystrom, lovingly referred to as ‘Pancho’ for decades by both students and colleagues, was a highly respected Math teacher at Camden Catholic for 45 years, serving many of those years as the Math Department chair. From 1969 to 2015, Mr. Nystrom taught with energy, discipline and extreme care for the success of his students. He was a constant supporter of students, regularly found cheering them on in the stands or outside of the classroom and rooting for them in all of their endeavors. He offered mentorship to new teachers, was a leader to the entire faculty, and a true representative of Honor, Faith and Loyalty. Without a doubt, Wayne Nystrom was one of the brightest mathemeticians to ever hold a position on Camden Catholic’s Faculty.
Please join us on June 8 at 5:30PM for wine and hors d'oeuvres as we officially launch the Wayne Nystrom Memorial Scholarship Fund at Camden Catholic! Catch up with old friends and classmates, meet some of Wayne's family, and celebrate Wayne's tremendous legacy of math education and student support at CCHS. In addition to revelry and reminiscing, we will dedicate a plaque outside Wayne's classroom (Room 214) and meet the 2026-27 recipients of both the Jack Phipps and Wayne Nystrom Memorial Math Award.
